ZLA Position Requirements

The following tables define what ratings, endorsments, and certificates you must possess before controlling a position solo in ZLA. If you are a new controller holding the VATSIM Observer rating, you must first pass the VATUSA S1 written exam. Next you will work with one of our instructors/mentors in an offline "sweatbox" session(s) to promote you to an S1.

To determine which airports and airspace are classified as "Major/LCTP", examine the Global Rating Airports link.

PEAK HOURS are defined as Mon, Wed, Fri from 18:00-23:59 and Sat and Sun from 12:00-23:59 Pacific Time.

    Special Notes:

  1. The VATSIM rating listed is the minimum to work the position.

  2. During major events, controllers holding only a Global Controller endorsment are not allowed to participate without prior approval from the ATM, DATM, TA, or the Events Coordinator.

  3. The GC (Global Controller) endorsement is dependant on the existing ratings the controller has, i.e. a S1 will have a full tower exam, whereas the S3 will have to demonstrate approach skills.

  4. The TWR Solo endorsement allows the controller to work any airport during OFF PEAK hours.

  5. The OTS APP certificate is sector specific for operations during PEAK hours, i.e you cannot control LAS_APP, if you only have a SAN tracon certificate.
