Thanks for your interest in becoming a Visiting Controller at ZLA! If you're interested in joining ZLA as a full member, this isn't the page for you. If you'd like to become a full member, you'll need either to join ZLA from VATUSA here, or if you are or previously were in an ARTCC, from the VATUSA transfer form.

Visiting Controllers must understand the significant limitations that they face at ZLA. First, ZLA does not provide training to Visiting Controllers, but only familiarization with local procedures. If you're interested in the ZLA Training Program, but aren't ready to commit as a full member, this isn't the route for you. You won't get the same in-depth, intensive training that home ZLA controllers receive, and besides, the regular program is too rigorous for all but the most committed visitor to undertake. Controllers that aren't competent to work the positions they are rated for are and will continue to be sent home for retraining. ZLA's instructor availability for Visiting Controllers is very limited, and is lower priority than training of home ZLA controllers. We are already stressed to the limits of our availability with our home controllers, so Visiting Controllers should not expect significant training time.

In order to become a Visiting Controller, ZLA requires that you are in good standing in your home ARTCC/FIR, and that you obtain a letter from your ATM, Chief, or Division Director to that effect. Your application will not be processed until the letter is received by the ZLA Air Traffic Manager. This rule can be waived under special circumstances. Recommendation letters must be sent to atm@laartcc.org. In addition, we require that you familiarize yourself with all of the applicable ZLA Policies prior to plugging in. In particular, the Position Restrictions Policy, Global Rating Airports, and Visiting and Transfer Controller Policy are critical. For information on the ZLA Training Program, please review the Training Program Page. Most importantly, you cannot plug into any ZLA position until you've been explicitly certified to do so, INCLUDING positions at Minor Airports.

If you understand these limitations and responsibilities, please fill out the application form below.
